Just over a week ago, the UK Supreme Court decided - using very dodgy logic* - that, for the purposes of the 2010 Equality Act, only your gender assigned at birth mattered. Apart from if people wanted to discriminate further against trans people. So trans women could be eliminated from women only spaces, but also trans men could be as well, based on, well, vibes.
(*Dodgy logic helped no doubt that they agreed to hear from three separate anti trans groups, but refused to take evidence from a single trans person, including a trans woman judge.)
(*Oh yes, and they also decided to include their own special straight person definition of lesbian, which I'm guessing is now the legal definition of lesbian in the uk, to whit a lesbian is someone who has never been attracted to anyone assigned male at birth.)
But still. This was only an option, not something that had to be followed apart from by bigots.
Well, that's where our shitty arse government took up the baton and fucking ran with it. Government ministers said that trans women should be banned from using women's toilets (again, not something required by the ruling) and last night the laughably named Equalities and Human Rights Commission, something that's became a bastion of anti trans rhetoric under the Tories, and kept largely intact with the same people under Labour, issued their 'guidance'.
Trans women should be banned from using women's facilities, including public loos and at workplaces. Trans men should be banned from using men's facilities, including public loos and at workplaces. Trans women can be banned from using men's facilities, and trans men can be banned from using women's facilities, but, you know, they'd really appreciate it if they had somewhere to go.
Oh, yes, and if you're a lesbian only group of 25 people or more, or a woman only group, you can't include anyone assigned male at birth, and vice versa for gay only groups.
Technically, this is only guidance for the moment, but if Labour proposes it as a bill or amendment, it's not as though the Tories are going to vote against it.
Fuck this country's shitty arse politicians and even more shitty arse media, and fuck anyone who supports the magical school lady.
I'm trying not to cry as I'm huddled on my sofa right now.
